The crop top – some people dread it, some people love it, but I’m here to tell you from the bottom of my heart that no matter what shape or size you are, any girl can wear one (under age 40…sorry!). I’ve taken the time to list the top nine rules for wearing a crop top, so you don’t look like you’re wearing, well, a crap top.

Rule #1: Never show your belly button. Always make sure your pants or skirt are pulled above your naval leaving the under rib cage showing.

Rule #2: Always wear understated shoes when rocking the crop top. Wedges or clunky heels will take away from the femininity of the look and leave you looking more like a hooker.

Rule #3: If you want to look flirty, Keep the color palette of your outfit subdued if you’re wearing a circle skirt and crop top combo!

Ruler #4: Wear it with confidence and conviction, keep a tall posture and make sure those boobies are tucked in tight!

Rule #5: If you want a more sophisticated look, wear a mini shirt with a high collar. It covers a bit more skin (even if it is on your neck) and gives a subtly sophisticated edge.

Rule #6: If your going for the retro-girly look, a bralette works perfectly with a knee-grazing A-line skirt.

Rule #7: For a downtown edgy vibe, try pairing your crop top with baggy pants to infuse a downtown cool vibe. You can totally recreate this look with your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans!

Rule #8: You can never go wrong pairing your crop top with some high waisted leather pants.

Rule #9: If you’re feeling more demure or the weather is cold, pair your crop top with a crop jacket.

Now I have compiled for you a collage of some of my favorite crop top looks. Enjoy!

How to Pick A Winter Coat

Winter blues got you feeling cold and down? Turn that frown upside down with a brand new winter coat. I’ll be the first to admit that I quiver at the thought of having to wear a winter jacket. Traditionally stodgy and bland, winter coats act as a puffy shield to what was once otherwise a cute outfit. Sure they keep you warm, but why do they have to look so boring? I’m here to tell you that winter coats are now available in fashionable styles and colors.

Before you go out and buy, you first need to know the difference between a jacket and coat. A jacket rests at your hips and does little to keep you truly warm and can’t be worn over a thick sweater or blazer, and a coat is made of a thicker, natural fabric and is a must to keep you warm. Today we’ll be focusing in particular on coats. The first factor to keep in mind is fabric. The best fabrics to keep you warm are wool and cashmere. Cashmere is far warmer, but the high cost and short durability of the fabric often make it moot against the strength of wool in snowy conditions. If you need a really warm coat, opt for one that also has a thin layer of Thinsulate or goose down sewn into the typical lining. This will give you an extra layer, but in most cases a wool or cashmere coat needs only the acetate lining for a comfortable fit over your clothes; the outer fabric itself does all the work.

The second factor to keep in mind is fit. Choosing the right fit is essential in knowing how to pick a winter coat. The shoulder seams themselves should fall just over the edge of your natural shoulder. When in doubt, go shopping while wearing a blazer or thick sweater. Not all coats follow the same measurement dimensions, so this will give you a better idea of fit and comfort. But don’t just slip the coat on: find a chair and sit down while wearing the coat; raise your arms; bend down and tie your shoe. You’ll be sporting this new coat in a variety of situations and you need to give it a real test drive before buying it.

The last factor you have to consider is style. Do you want a traditional black coat that goes with everything or do you want a more vibrant colored coat to stand apart from the crowd? Style also includes length, and the longer the jacket, the warmer it is. Now to my list of my favorite winter coats to keep you comfy AND chic!

Norris Frames it Right

Feb 26 0 Comments
Maggie Norris, the fashion power house, seems to be on a role lately. The consummate artist and haute couture darling has recently teamed up with optician Selima on New York’s swanky Upper East Side to create Four distinctly colored frames, including both matte and polished finishes. Norris and Selima have feverishly worked together to come up with the perfect pair of sunglasses; ones that are inspired by the glamour and style of 1930’s Hollywood Darling Marlene Dietrich.

Norris’s virtuosic visions found her pulling from piles of inspiration at her 8th Avenue atelier. Inspirations for the sunglasses have a similar style and sophistication her clients have come to respect with strong influences from 1930s Hollywood. You also can’t help but notice a similar aesthetic to her work from the time when she was a designer at Ralph Lauren; A world where art and beauty meld into a dialogue of craft and expertise.

The sunglasses, available in both New York and Paris (naturally), have garnered a following of Dietrich devotees. On any given night in New York you’re bound to see some snappy socialite donning a pair of ‘Marlene’s.’

One thing is undeniable, Norris lives and breathes in a world where art and beauty meld into a dialogue of craft and expertise. She transcends this notion into all of her work and clearly, it is paying off. Of note, both Norris and her design ‘Marlene’ share an equal amount of beauty, sophistication, class, and timelessness.

For more information or to purchase the sunglasses visit SelimaOptique.com

Equestrian Ego

Feb 24 0 Comments
Equestrian chic. The trend is fundamentally nothing new, yet year after year, season after season, it is reinvented on runways and celebrities alike. Having an “equestrian ego” is to dress in all equestrian attire, which might sound bawdy but is actually quite swanky. Women have been dressing equestrian both inside and outside of the stables for many years. Some of the most notable women with equestrian egos were Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich. Dietrich and Kelly popularized the now iconic riding pants, tall stable boot, tailored riding jacket, and fetching neck scarf.
Grace Kelly

Marlene Dietrich
Horseback riding and Hollywood having links is nothing new. Today we have Gisele Bundchen and Madonna as well as Monegasque royalty Charlotte Casiraghi as equestrians. All three of these women blur the lines with their stallion style both at the stable and outside it.

Charlotte Casiraghi

Gisele Bunchen

Madonna
So what, exactly, is proper stable attire? According to Dover Saddlery, “Riders should wear coats of any tweed or Melton for hunting (conservative wash jackets in season), breeches or jodhpurs and boots. Conservative colored protective headgear with no additional adornments  is mandatory. Choose a dark colored hunt coat. Though colors are not specified in the rule, dark blue and black are the most popular choices currently. Under your coat, wear a button-down show shirt that has either a wrapneck or a standup collar and choker. White is the classic color choice for equitation, but a very pale-colored shirt that coordinates with your jacket is acceptable. Choose to wear beige, green-beige or tan colored breeches. The breeches can be either side-zip or front-zip in style. Various styles of breeches from Tailored Sportsman, such as the Royal Hunter Low Rise Breech and the Supreme Hunter Low Rise Breech, are popular with equitation riders. Very young children may wish to wear light-colored jodhpurs. A belt should always be worn with breeches that have belt loops; it should be conservative in style and match the color of the boots.  Choose tall, black leather field boots unless you’re a child rider. The most popular choice of footwear for equitation riders is a pair of black field boots. Young children wearing jodhpurs should wear brown paddock boots with matching brown garters or knee straps. Finish your look by choosing a pair of black gloves. To suit riders’ individual preferences, you’ll discover many styles of show gloves in both leather and synthetic fabrics. Consider special design features that may assist you with your riding comfort, such as flexible gussets between the fingers, added textures for grip and ventilation panels to keep your hands cool.”

Gisele, definitely not in proper horse attire
Ready to quit horsing around and get down to dressing? Luckily for us, designers like Hermes, Maggie Norris and Gucci have made the equestrian look attainable at a price, both on the runways and off.

Kaleido-SCOPE IT OUT!

Feb 22 0 Comments
KaleidoSCOPE OUT these insanely magical prints; kaleidoscope prints! We’re all probably pretty familiar with what a kaleidoscope looks like, feels like, and works like, but the intricacies are what makes the simple gadgets so fascinating. So how do these colored collages appear? A kaleidoscope is a cylinder with mirrors containing loose, colored objects such as pebbles, beads, or glass. When the viewer looks into one end, light entering the other creates a colorful pattern, due to the reflection off of the mirrors. A Kaleidoscope operates on the principle of multiple reflection, where several mirrors are placed at an angle to one another, (usually 60°). Typically there are three rectangular mirrors set at 60° to each other so that they form an equilateral triangle. The 60° angle creates seven duplicate images of the objects, five at 60°, and 2 at 90°. As the tube is rotated, the tumbling of the colored objects presents varying colors and patterns. Arbitrary patterns shows up as a beautiful symmetrical pattern created by the reflections. So what does all this Science jargon mean??? Fashion!!! I’m here to present to you some of the runways most beautiful kaleidoscope inspired garments.

Think Outside the Box

Feb 21 0 Comments
Think outside the box and next time you go out, think about carrying a box clutch. Small and sturdy, the box clutch offers an alternative way of carrying your personals to a typical envelope clutch or purse. The box clutch has been all the rage on the runways and with celebrities, seen immortalized by designer Alexander McQueen, whose box clutch is otherwise refereed to as a knuckleduster. Many celebrities are feeling foxy carrying something boxy, and those include Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Middleton, and Jennifer Lopez to name a few.

The box clutch is not only chic but also practical because the structure required to maintain the box shape (unlike a floppy purse shape) means the clutch must be solid and sturdy, often made of plastic or glass. Why don’t you take a step outside the box, and try one of the great box clutches I have found!

Rock Candy

The latest trend in costume jewelry? Rock candy! Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings all that look like they’re adorned with pieces of rock candy.
These multi-colored baubles are particularly fun statement pieces, though of note I would add that you should probably only wear one piece of jewelry at a time. Take a trip through candy-land and rock out with your rock candy out!

Hue Are You?

Feb 19 0 Comments
The colors one wears say a lot about a person. You can tell if someone is cheerful or melancholy, serious or outgoing. Colors speak volumes beyond the cloth they’re dyed. For example, If your favorite color is red, you are action oriented with a deep need for physical fulfillment and to experience life through the five senses. If orange is your favorite color, you have a great need to be with people, to socialize with them, and be accepted and respected as part of a group. You also have a need for challenges in your life, whether it is physical or social challenges. Choosing yellow as your favorite means you have a deep need for logical order in your everyday life and to be able to express your individuality by using your logical mind to inspire and create new ideas. If green is your favorite, you have a deep need to belong, to love and be loved, and to feel safe and secure. You need acceptance and acknowledgment for the everyday things you do for others – just a ‘thank you’ is sufficient. Lovers of blue have a deep need to find inner peace and truth, to live their life according to their ideals and beliefs without having to change their inflexible viewpoint of life to satisfy others. If purple is your favorite color, you have a deep need for emotional security and to create order and perfection in all areas of your life, including your spiritual life. You also have a deep need to initiate and participate in humanitarian projects, helping others in need. Lovers of brown have a deep need for a safe, secure, simple and comfortable existence with supportive family and friends. Lovers of black have a need for power and control in order to protect their own emotional insecurities. And if white is your personality color, your deepest need is for simplicity in your own life and to be independent and self-reliant so you do not need to depend on anyone else.
Another thing about colors is every skin tone has a particular set of hues that happen to look good on them. For instance blond haired tan skinned people look better in brighter colors, pale skinned brown haired people look better in jewel tones. Another way to find out what hue is for you is to look at your eye color; if you have green eyes you probably look good in green, brown eyes probably look best in darker colors. For your personal enjoyment, I have put together color boards pulling some of my favorite garments and accessories and grouping them by color category. Pick a board, any board, and find which dye pleases your eye!

TOTE-ally Cool

Feb 19 0 Comments

Totes. We carry them with us everyday. They’re our personal arm candy, they behold our most precious belongings. Unlike our clothing or our shoes, we carry (more or less) the same totes around with us from day to day. What does our tote say about us? Are we leaders or followers? Trendsetters or conservatives? Call me “tote-ally” crazy but I really think you can judge a lot by the tote a person chooses to carry. Me personally? I’m a sucker for my brown Goyard bag with my hand painted last name “WINNER” in green and white chipping off from overuse. The signature white and brown pattern with my “winner” emblem adorned from the factories in Paris signifies timeless elegance yet up to date with the trend.

My mother carries a vintage brown Louis Vuitton with gold hardware and camel colored straps. Her tote is slightly more sophisticated than mine as it doesn’t have dashes of green in it like mine does (she is older than me, after all!) but the fact that it carries the iconic LV’s signifies to me that my mother is trying to stay “in fashion.”

Now don’t get me wrong, you don’t need fancy logos to stay in style, there are plenty of totes out there for a TOTE-ally reasonable price that will keep your personals posh. I have compiled a list of some of my favorite totes available on the Internet for purchase. Take my vote and buy a tote!
